King O'Malley was born in North America on the Canadian border. O'Malley migrated to Australia in the late 1800's. King O'Malley was elected to Parliament and appointed as the Minister for Home Affairs and given the tast of selecting a location of the new Capital City of Australia "Canberra". He oversaw the competition that lead to Walter Burley Griffin being chosen as the architect of Canberra in 1910. And so it was that Canberra was “born” from the work of King O’Malley. The man himself was also a teetotaler, and ordered that Canberra was alcohol-free from 1911 to 1927, at which point the law was overturned because they were, after all, allowed to have alcohol at Parliament House!
